Day one of the third-annual Winn Junior Cup Challenge ended much the same way as the 2012 event, with the West on top. Natalie Gulbis’ defending champion West squad finished the day with a five-point lead over Butch Harmon’s East team as the score settled at 10-5.
Hosted at Rio Secco Golf Club, morning scramble matches saw the East take an early 5-0 lead after a 64-66 victory over nine holes. Solid play from the boys on both squads kept the matches close, but a strong finish from the East’s Nicole Morales (South Salem, N.Y.) and Casey Danielson (Osceola, Wis.) made the difference as the squad finished at 8-under-par.
With the afternoon format switched to four-ball, the West squad quickly claimed early leads for both the boys and girls matches. Alison Lee (Valencia, Calif.) and Andrea Lee (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) staved off a comeback from the East squad, saying steady through the final holes to claim a 2 & 1 victory. For the boys, Brad Dalke (McKinney, Texas) and Cameron Champ (Sacramento, Calif.) built a 2-up lead over the East’s Jim Liu (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Adam Wood (Zionsville, N.Y.), before eventually claiming five points for the West squad on the final hole.
