The field for the 2012 Polo Golf Junior Classic was cut from 78 to 32 in each division as the stroke play competition concluded at PGA National Resort & Spa Tuesday, sending the top-32 performers in each division to the first round of match play. The 2012 field includes several familiar faces from the 2011 event.
Boys Division
Making the cut and securing the final spot in the bracket was Parker Derby of Columbus, Ga., who prevailed in a three-hole, six-for-one playoff. Derby advanced to the finals of the 2011 Polo Golf Junior Classic and is one of three in the Boys Division who return for the second portion of the tournament in 2012. Adam Wood of Zionsville, Ind., and Brad Dalke of McKinney, Texas, also advanced to match play. Wood and Dalke each made appearances in the quarterfinals of last year’s event; Wood fell to Derby and Dalke was defeated by 2011 champion and 2012 Rolex Junior Player of the Year Matthew NeSmith of North Augusta, S.C.
In Wednesday’s opening round, Derby will face stroke play medalist Scott Scheffler of Dallas, Dalke will take on Jack Maguire of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Wood will face off against Jacob Solomon of Dublin, Calif.
Girls Division
Twelve return as match play competitors working towards the distinguished champion title. Two notable returning golfers in the division are defending champion Nicole Morales of South Salem, N.Y., and stroke play co-medalist Esther Lee of Los Alamitos, Calif.
