The Ravenwood Junior Championship is a 54-hole stroke play competition played on the par-72, Ravenwood Golf Club. The event features 108 boys and 36 girls, ages 12-18, from 19 states and 5 countries. The Boys Division plays the course at 6,976 yards while the Girls Division plays the course at 6,123 yards.
A Festive Fourth
Ravenwood Golf Club knows how to celebrate the Fourth of July. Juniors and spectators had the chance to witness stellar fireworks after the second round of play in a prime location- right on the course. Fun and games filled the air to pass the time as juniors participated in a closest to the hole competition; a crowd gathered to watch players shoot off the back patio to the practice green, rallying to win a hat signed by their favorite staff members. AJGA staff even started their own putting party as they waited for dusk to fade, with pairs taking alternate shots in hopes of earning the lowest stroke total.
Even though the tournament stakes were high on the actual holiday, with a 50 percent cut on the line, players and parents still turned out in true patriotic fashion. A few players donned blue shirts or red hats, but the brave were decked out in full stars and stripes. Ravenwood Golf Club successfully set the holiday tone, placing American flags along the practice green and other perimeters of the property.
No Doubt
A hole-in-one is not a common occurrence. The odds vary somewhat, depending on the publication or organization referenced, and there is not a mathematical equation or scientific solution to decipher the exact numbers. However, experts in the golf industry have made a few estimations:
- 1 in 3,756 for a professional golfer and 1 in 12,750 for any amateur, according to a 1999 Golf Digest article.
- Ireland’s National Hole-in-One Club guesstimates the odds of acing a hole with any given swing is one in 33,000.
- Sports Illustrated puts the odds at 45,000 to 1 for carding an ace on a typical par-3 hole.
Despite the projected odds, the AJGA had the opportunity to witness an ace this week at Ravenwood Golf Club. During the TaylorMade-adidas Qualifier round, Zach Leisenring of Rogers, Ark., carded his first ever hole-in-one on the par-3, 169-yard No. 17. Congratulations to Zach who beat the odds this week!
